The Firm recently advised the Social Media Visual Platform Daily Motion on the newly enacted Rules in Pakistan regarding social media.
The Rules define the terms Social Media and Social Network Services. The Rules define in detail the categories of unlawful content. The Rules also describe in detail how a report can be lodged with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority and how the Authority shall proceed with any such complaint once lodged.
Interestingly the Authority under the Rules has not asked for all social media service providers to register with the Authority but that only a Significant Social Media Company shall register with the Authority. Significant Social Media Company means and includes a Social Media Company with more than half million users in Pakistan or is in the list specially notified by PTA for this purpose from time to time.
